“Basement of the Dead” in Aurora, IL is Mediocre

http://42fear.com/

You don’t even see the characters they show in their brief promo on the website (not that the promo was good anyhow). They have NONE of the iconic characters of horror, like Michael Myers, Jason, etc. They don’t use ANY of the iconic horror tunes either. They rely a lot upon putting you in the dark and a guy saying “raaar” from some dark corner – but you can’t even see the guy half the time. There are no chain saws. The costumes are ok but fairly generic. This is literally the large basement of an old factory like building.

The most positive things I can say are that they only let you in 7 people at a time, so you can’t hide in a crowd (the basement can only have 50 people at once, including the workers). The complete darkness is good but the monsters need a light of some sort so you can see them all of a sudden. They also have these balloon type things you need to push through in a few entrances, which makes you feel like you are in a very narrow space.

Tickets are $18 a piece. We got there at 7:45pm or so and didn’t enter until 9:20pm (the hours are 7pm-11pm). It took 15 minutes to walk through the maze. I wouldn’t go back, but I won’t say I am 100% disappointed. Just 99%.

Weight Training Guidelines

Everything in green is taken directly from given references. One of the biggest mistakes people make is coming up with their own theories on how to exercise. Pay attention to your body yes, search for what works yes, but don’t make things up out of the blue. There is a science to bodybuilding, all you need to do is become a student.

CIRCUIT TRAINING TO DEVELOP SLOW-TWITCH MUSCLE FIBER

“If you find you have a hard time gaining size in a particular muscle, it could be because it has a predominance of slow twitch muscle fibers. Higher reps (e.g. 12 to 15 reps), higher volume (more sets) and shorter rest periods (30 seconds to a minute between sets) can help you to maximize those muscles.

This doesn’t mean you should use light weight, though. You should still strive to use weights that are as heavy as possible that will cause you to reach failure in those higher rep ranges. If you don’t use heavy weights, you won’t give your muscles a reason to grow.”

“Higher volume weight training (i.e. 3 sets versus 1 set of each exercise) with short rest periods of approximately 1 minutes can stimulate a greater acute growth hormone release (Kraemer 1991, 1993; Mulligan 1996).” – http://www.exrx.net/WeightTraining/Myths.html

HEAVY WEIGHT LIFTING TO DEVELOP FAST-TWITCH MUSCLE FIBER

“To maximize your muscles with fast twitch fibers, you’ll need to train with low to moderate reps (e.g. 4 to 8 reps), rest periods of around 1 to 2 minutes and a moderate training volume (too much volume will compromise recovery).”

“Intense weight training utilizing multiple large muscles with longer rest between sets may also accentuate body lipid deficit by increasing post training epinephrine. Intramuscular triacylgycerol is thought to be an important energy substrate following repeated 30 second maximal exercise with 4 minute recovery intervals (McCartney 1996, Tremblay 1994). Rest periods lasting approximately 4 minutes between maximal exercise exercise of very short duration is required for almost complete creatine phosphate recovery required for repeated maximal bouts (McCartney 1986).” http://www.exrx.net/WeightTraining/Myths.html

Public Warned about Freed Wildlife

http://www.cnn.com/2011/10/18/us/ohio-animals-on-loose/index.html?hpt=hp_t2

(CNN) — Dozens of animals — including bears, lions, tigers, cheetahs and wolves — are on the prowl in eastern Ohio, authorities said Tuesday night.

Area residents were urged to stay indoors until all the animals had been controlled. Authorities were “shooting to kill,” said Muskingum County Sheriff Matthew J. Lutz. Forty-eight had been freed, and as of 8:40 p.m. ET, about two dozen had been shot, Lutz said.

The animals’ owner was found dead of unknown circumstances on Tuesday, according to CNN affiliate WBNS.

The Columbus Zoo, Ohio State Police and The Wilds, a safari-themed park, have responded to the incident, the state police said.

U.S. Deportations Reach Historic Levels

An undocumented Guatemalan charged as a criminal prepares to board a deportation flight in Mesa, Arizona, this summer.

Record number of deportations this year, with record percentages of criminals amongst them. Awesome job by the Obama administration. These are criminals off the street, fraudulent welfare claims off the books, less money we need to spend maintaining prisoners, and doors to terrorism, gangs, and drug trafficking closed. Prioritized deportations is exactly the way to go. The ACLU needs to get it’s head out of it’s liberal ass, it is constantly bemoaning policies that keep the country safer. What do they want zero deportations? They don’t make any sense. Their claim is that latino families are being affected – ok that’s why we have a prioritized system. Don’t commit any crimes in the USA – or I know, how about don’t sneak into a country illegally, have a family, and then be surprised that you can’t stay.

http://www.cnn.com/2011/10/18/us/immigrant-deportations/index.html?hpt=hp_c2

Washington (CNN) — Nearly 400,000 people were deported from the United States in the past fiscal year, the largest number in the history of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, the government announced Tuesday.

The year-end removal numbers “underscore the administration’s focus on removing individuals … that fall into priority areas” such as lawbreakers, threats to national security and repeat violators, the agency said in a news release.

Overall in fiscal year 2011, immigration officials said, 396,906 individuals were removed. Of these, 216,698, nearly 55%, had been convicted of felonies or misdemeanors. That’s an 89 percent increase of criminals from three years ago, the enforcement agency said.

“This includes 1,119 aliens convicted of homicide; 5,848 aliens convicted of sexual offenses; 44,653 aliens convicted of drug related crimes; and 35,927 aliens convicted of driving under the influence,” it said.

The percentage was even higher for some regions. In the sector that covers Houston, Beaumont and Corpus Christi, Texas, about 74% of the 20,450 removals were of people with criminal records, said Gregory Palmore of the agency’s Houston office.

Female Circumcision

http://www.islamset.com/hip/health5/circum.html

Female circumcision

With regard to female circumcision, it is a question on which there is controversy among scholars. As for the hadith that speak of it, none aspires to a degree of authenticity which would indicate that female circumcision is obligatory .24 One of the hadith often quoted on the subject is that of Umm Attia, a woman who performed female circumcision.  It is said that God’s Messenger (pbuh) told her, “Umm Attia, restrict yourself to a sniff and do not overstrain; (this way), it is more pleasant in appearance and more satisfactory to the husband”. Al-Iraqi in Al-mughni ‘an al-asfaar says: “The hadith concerning Umm Attia is quoted by Al-Hakim and Al-Baihaqi, on the authority of Al- Dhahhak ibn Qais. Abu Dawood mentions something similar to this hadith of Umm Attia, and both versions are lacking in authenticity”.
As Abu Dawood quotes it, the hadith says: “Do not overstrain; that is more pleasant for the woman and more preferable to her husband”. Abu Dawood points out that the hadith is reported in its general sense on the authority of Ubaidullah ibn Arnr ibn Abd al-Malik. Abu Dawood comments that: “Its chain of transmitters is not strong. Besides, it is reported not as a direct quote attributed to the Prophet (pbuh). Moreover, Muhammad ibn Hassan is unknown. This hadith is poor in authenticity”.
This shows that Abu Dawood mentions the hadith only to point out its weakness. It is quoted with several chains of transmission, all of which are poor in authenticity, as explained in my detailed footnote. Some of these are poorer than others. This goes to prove that what Ibn al-Munther says, as quoted by Ibn
Hajar in Al-talklzis, is true. He says: “In regards to circumcision, there is no authentic report to refer to, nor a sunna to be followed”.
Consider how these two eminent scholars, Abu Dawood and Al-Iraqi, as welJ as the others mentioned in my documentation of this hadith, judge it as a hadith markedly lacking in authenticity. It is better to pay no attention to later scholars who sought to classify it as authentic. It is very unJikely that the Prophet (pbuh) would address a woman, and be so candid with her, on such a subject, using the words, “that is more pleasant for the woman and more preferable to her husband”.
Even if the Izadith is authentic, it does not imply that circumcision is a requirement. All it does is to forbid removing too much of the parts concerned. So, if female circumcision is to be performed, it should not be overdone.
This is why some scholars say: “Circumcision is obligatory for men and a signof respect in the case of women”. A hadith with similar wording is quoted, attributed to Usama al-Huthali, who directly quotes the Prophet (pbuh) as saying: “Circumcision is a sunna for men and a sign of respect for women”.
Hadith scholar AJ-Iraqi comments on the status of this hadith: “It is related by Ahmad and Al-Baihaqi, with a weak chain of transmission”.
Ibn Hajar says, “According to one opinion of the Shafie school of thought, it is not required for women.31 This is the one mentioned by the author of Al-mughni, quoting Ahmad ibn Hanbal. The majority of scholars, including some of the Shafie school of thought, are of the view that it is not a requirement”, that is for  women.
Al-Mawardi describes it as follows: “Female circumcision is cutting a fold of skin in the upper part of the vagina, which resembles a fruit stone or a rooster comb, but without removing the whole fold”.
AI-Nawawi says: “It is cutting off the lowest part of the fold of skin in the upper part of the vagina”.
However, female circumcision as currently practised in some Islamic countries in Africa, does not observe the limitation set by scholars, but goes much further . So-called Pharaonic circumcision (infibulation)35 is still common in certain countries. Everything is removed, with the labia and the organ itself being mutilated and just an opening left for urine and blood.
Physicians tell us that female circumcision, and infibulation in particular , has severe consequences, which are summed up as follows:-

  1. This form of circumcision is a distortion of the female organ that has a terrible psychological effect on women, causing depression, nervous tension, and anxiety.
  2. It weakens the sexual desire, and being so, when the girl gets married, it spoils marital life for her and becomes a major obstacle in the way of her sexual satisfaction.
  3. It may cause infection and introduce germs into a woman’s pelvis when it is performed by ignorant practitioners and at locations with poor sanitary conditions and with non-sterilized instruments. A girl exposed to such conditions usually gets sick and is exposed to inflammations, and her fallopian tubes become blocked. She may suffer acute, often fatal, bleeding after the operation. I may comment here that although
using non-sterilized instruments is not restricted to female circumcision, but is also common in male circumcision, the reason I mention it here is that it is currently common in Sudan and other countries.
  4. It may result in sterility. If i t does not and the woman concerned gets pregnant, delivery will be difficult, and will have to be surgical.
  5. As Dr Salah Abu Bakr37 says, female circumcision has adverse effects on the urinary system, and may cause a urinary fistula, which causes, in turn, retention of the urine and the menstrual blood. He notes other possible complications including inflammation in other organs, such as in thecervix of the uterus,  which is known as a uterine ulcer, or in the endometrium (inner lining of the womb ).

Since all these risks are involved in female circumcision, it cannot be legitimate under Islamic law, particularly since nothing that  recommends it is definitely established as said by the Prophet (pbuh). It is, however, established that he has said:  “Do not harm yourself or others”. This hadith is one of the basic principles of this True Religion.  The conclusion to be reached is that female circumcision is neither required nor is it an obligation nor a sunna.  This is the view taken by a great number of scholars in the absence of any hadith that may be authentically attributed to the Prophet (pbuh). Even those who regard female circumcision as being legitimate oppose its deviant forms.
I should mention here that some scholars have made a distinction between various countries with regard to the ruling concerning it. Ibn al-Haj says in Al-madkhal: “There are different views concerning women, whether circumcision should be performed for them in general or distinction is to be made between women of the east, in whose case it should be applied, and women of the west, in whose case there is no need for it, because, unlike women of the east, they do not have the additional flap of skin which is supposed to be cut”.
This is a good point, and scholars deal with it in the case of male children as well, where they say that if a boy is born without the flap of skin, nothing is required in his case.
A specialist in the medical profession once told me that in certain countries this additional fold in women gets so big that it becomes harmful. He says he has seen a case like that and has removed the fold.
In cases of this sort, no objection can be made to female circumcision as long as proper sanitary conditions are observed.
When all is taken into consideration, since female circumcision involves these certain and possible hazards, there is no doubt that it is better not to do it. If there is need to remove something that is oversized, it may be removed, but the person who removes it should avoid any excess.
These are the points I planned to discuss briefl y in this paper. There are aspects t of the subject-such as the history of circumcision, its position in ancient cultures, I the social habits involved, the celebrations held, and so on-which I have not I dealt with, because they have no bearing on the actual problem that people face.
I have appended to my paper the treatise written by Sudanese Professor Alliin Dawood, because of its great value. It was originally published in Khartoum. I pray God to guide me and grant me sound judgement, and I pray that this paper and its companion piece be of benefit. I pray God to make all our endeavours dedicated solely to His service. It is God who speaks the truth and guides people along the right path. Praise be to God, the Lord of all the worlds.

New Insights into Circuit Training

New Insights into Circuit Training
Len Kraviz, Ph.D.

Study Reviewed:
Gotshalk, L.A., Berger, R.A., and Kraemer, W.J. (2004). Cardiovascular responses to a high-volume continuous circuit resistance training protocol. Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, 18(4), 760-764.

Introduction
The new Dietary Guidelines for Americans provides science-based recommendations to reduce the risk for major chronic diseases and to promote health through diet and physical activity. Depending on a client’s needs and goals, fitness professionals are now faced with the challenge of designing anywhere from 30 minutes (to reduce the risk of chronic disease) to 60-90 minutes (for sustained weight loss) of daily physical activity for their students. Fortunately, a newly published article on circuit training provides new research and training insights to help fulfill the modern challenges of exercise program design.

Circuit Training History and Fundamentals
Circuit training is an everlasting and evolving training exercise program that was developed by R.E. Morgan and G.T. Anderson in 1953 at the University of Leeds in England (Kravitz 1996). The term circuit refers to a number of carefully selected exercises arranged consecutively. In the original format, 9 to 12 stations comprised the circuit. This number may vary according to the design of the circuit. Each participant moves from one station to the next with little (15 to 30 seconds) or no rest, performing a 15- to 45-second workbout of 8 to 20 repetitions at each station (using a resistance of about 40% to 60% of one-repetition maximum {1RM}). The program may be performed with exercise machines, hand-held weights, elastic resistance, calisthenics or any combination.

By adding a 30-second to 3-minute (or longer) aerobics station between each station, referred to as aerobic circuit training, the method attempts to improve cardiorespiratory endurance as well (although this has not been conclusively supported in experimental research). This newly published article by Gotshalk and colleagues explores a circuit workout protocol without the added aerobics stations to see if a cardiovascular effect can be attained.

THE STUDY
Subjects
Eleven college males who had completed a minimum of 11 weeks of a beginning resistance training program volunteered for this study. All subjects were quite familiar with the correct performance and safety techniques of the exercises used in this study. Choosing pre-trained subjects allowed the researches a better opportunity to test, observe and analyze the physiological effects of the circuit training protocol.

Overview of Study Procedures
Strength and Cardiovascular Tests
Testing included strength and cardiovascular fitness assessments. Following standardized procedures, each subject performed a 1RM lift on the following 10 exercises: leg press, bench press, leg curl, latissimus pull-down, arm curl, seated press, triceps push-down, upright row, leg extension, and seated row.

On a separate day, subjects performed both submaximal and maximal aerobic capacity (or VO2max) treadmill tests which were separated by a 10-minute rest interval. For the submaximal cardiovascular test, oxygen consumption was monitored when treadmill running elicited a heart rate (HR) of 150 beats/min. Heart rate and oxygen consumption were measured on the incremental (gradually increasing in speed and grade) maximal exercise test to exhaustion.

New Circuit Protocol Testing
A week after the strength and cardiovascular testing, subjects completed the circuit training protocol where oxygen uptake and heart rate were measured during 5 circuits of the 10-exercise protocol. Subjects performed 10 repetitions of each exercise at 40% of their measured 1RM. One major procedure insight from this study was the recommendation by one of the authors not to go higher then the 40% of 1RM (from unpublished data of the author). It should be noted that a goal of this program is to obtain a muscular fitness workout that also elicits a cardiovascular effect. Thus, it is important for fitness professionals replicating this 10-exercise study protocol with their clients not to be overly ambitious in increasing the load as this program has plenty of volume (reps x sets). Perhaps explaining to the client the goal of the program would be meaningful. All repetitions were performed at a 40 repetitions/min cadence and the only rest (2-5 seconds) was that needed to change exercises (exercises were performed on a Universal Gym multi-station device). A second major procedure insight from this study was the sequence and the methodology of the circuit order of exercises (See Table 1). The authors present and physiologically test a carefully planned order of the 10 exercises for the major muscles of the body. As seen in Table 1, the circuit sequence alternated joint actions two ways: 1) by performing opposite actions of a joint in series, and 2) alternating upper and lower-body joint actions. The objective of this sequencing was to provide an optimal rest period to the muscle groups involved in this workout program.

Physiological data was collected five times during the 5 circuits: after completion of 0.6 circuit (2:32 average minutes), 1.6 circuits (6:24 average minutes), 2.6 circuits (10:23 average time), 3.6 circuits (15:30 average minutes), and 4.6 circuits (16:36 average time). The subjects averaged 18.62 minutes to complete all 5 circuits.

Results
The treadmill maximal test provides important maximal VO2 and HR data from which the physiological measures during the circuit performance can be evaluated. It is consequential to note that all subjects followed the same circuit sequence (Table 1), but started the circuit at different points. This scientific control helped to better substantiate the physiological results. Inspecting Figure 1, it is clear that the %maxium heart rate was much higher than the %maximum VO2 response.

Figure 1. Comparison of %VO2 Max and %HR Max Responses During Circuits

Although this study did not investigate physiological mechanisms of HR to VO2 responses to exercise, it should be noted that previous research has demonstrated that the use of arm variations (overhead, in front, and to side as with the exercises used in the circuit) often leads to a differential increase in exercise HR as compared to VO2. The important practical implication is that HR alone may be an inaccurate indicator of the actually oxygen consumption (and thus caloric expenditure) of a circuit training protocol.

Perhaps a most profound finding of this study, from a health perspective, is that this investigation clearly shows that performance of this circuit of exercises, at this level of intensity elicited oxygen consumption values (39% to 51.5% of VO2max) that meet established guidelines of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) for the recommended intensity (40% to 85% of VO2maxR) of exercise for developing and maintaining cardiorespiratory fitness (Pollock et al, 1998). Thus, this circuit not only provides a suitable muscular fitness stimulus but also helps to meet ACSM cardiovascular guidelines and the newly published Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2005 for physical activity.

Bottom Line
This evidence-based research demonstrates that when properly performed and sequenced, a continuous circuit training protocol at a low intensity (40% 1RM) and without aerobics stations, can evoke a satisfactory cardiorespiratory response. The study provides beneficial guidelines in circuit exercise choice, order, design and performance to improve or help to maintain the muscular fitness and cardiorespiratory fitness for regular exercising students and clients. It should be noted that the subjects in this study had 11 weeks of resistance training experience before participation. Personal trainers and fitness professionals should always incorporate a safe and gradual progression with this and any exercise program. Notwithstanding, as fitness practitioners and personal trainers wanting to present the most effective exercise programs for our students and clients, it is somewhat reassuring to be able to use a circuit training program that has been scientifically authenticated.

False Evidence:

 http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap021029.html

Muslims claim that this canyon on the moon is proof that the moon was split in half. A large canyon is far from proving that the entire moon was split in half. We have the grand canyon on Earth – does it’s existence imply that the Earth was once split in half? Secondly, had the moon once been in two pieces it would have been early in the history of the moon (and Earth) not just 1400 years ago. There would have certainly been some sort of astronomical effects on the Earth had the moon’s gravitational pull on the Earth been disturbed.
